How YouTube earnings are estimated

Earnings ≈ monetized views ÷ 1,000 × RPM. RPM (revenue per mille) is what a creator actually receives per 1,000 views after YouTube takes its 45% share of ad revenue. It differs from CPM, which is what advertisers pay.

Why RPM varies so much

Advertisers pay more to reach viewers who are about to spend money, so finance, software and business channels earn several times more per view than gaming or entertainment. Viewers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia are worth more than viewers elsewhere, and rates rise towards the end of the year when ad budgets peak.

Frequently asked questions

How many views do you need to make money on YouTube?

You first need to join the YouTube Partner Program: 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. After that, every monetized view earns according to the channel's RPM.

Do Shorts pay the same?

No. Shorts revenue comes from a shared pool and RPMs are usually far lower, often a few cents to around $0.10 per 1,000 views.
